Over Speed Spin Testing is the
rotating equipment equivalent of a pressure vessel hydotest. By spin testing an impeller or
other rotating component we can verify the mechanical integrity of that impeller or component.
Since the rotating stress increases with the square of the speed, by over speed spin testing
at 115 % of the maximum operating speed we subject that component to 132 % of the operating speed
rotating stresses.
By measuring critical dimensions before spin testing and then again after
testing we can verify if the component stresses stayed below the material yield stress during testing.
If the dimensions are the same and the component passes a dye check then the component is good.
If there are cracks or if the dimensions have grown then there was either a material defect or not
sufficient margin to yield and the component is rejected. It is crucial that these errors
be found in an armored spin pit and not in service as the energy released in a rotating disk
failure can be disastrous.

parameters:
